ADU builder in Huntington Beach, CA

In Huntington Beach, the first question is whether your property is in the California Coastal Zone, which covers much of the city. We check your parcel, then plan the permit path and design around it.

Building an ADU in Huntington Beach.

What’s different about adding an ADU here, and how we plan around it.

Coastal Zone review

Properties in the Coastal Zone may need a coastal development permit and review under the city’s Local Coastal Program in addition to the standard ADU permit. State law still requires the city to allow ADUs there.

Multi-family lots are an opportunity

Huntington Beach approves coastal permits for ADUs on multi-family lots. In July 2026, for example, the city cleared two small two-story ADUs (about 420 and 480 sq ft, 18 ft tall) on a lot with an existing triplex. Since 2025, state law allows up to 8 detached ADUs on lots with existing multi-family buildings.

Strong rental demand

Beach-adjacent neighborhoods rent well year-round. Note that new ADUs must be rented for more than 30 days, and the city separately regulates short-term rentals.

Huntington Beach ADU questions

Common questions in Huntington Beach.

Do I need a coastal permit for an ADU in Huntington Beach?

If your property is in the Coastal Zone, often yes: a coastal development permit is typically required alongside the building permit. Outside the zone, the standard ministerial ADU process applies.

Can I add ADUs to my Huntington Beach rental property?

Yes. Lots with an existing multi-family building can add detached ADUs (up to 8, and no more than the number of existing units) plus conversion ADUs, subject to Coastal Zone review where it applies.

Can I rent my Huntington Beach ADU on Airbnb?

New ADUs must be rented for terms longer than 30 days, and Huntington Beach separately regulates short-term rentals, so a new ADU is best planned as a long-term rental.
