ADU builder in Altadena, CA

For many Altadena families, an ADU is part of coming home after the Eaton Fire, whether it’s built alongside a rebuilt house or as the first home back on the lot. Altadena is unincorporated, so LA County sets the rules, and we help you navigate them.

Building an ADU in Altadena.

What’s different about adding an ADU here, and how we plan around it.

ADUs in fire rebuilds

LA County lets Eaton Fire survivors include an ADU in their rebuild, and the county offers pre-approved standard plans for fire rebuilds, including ADU designs. Some rebuilding fees are being waived or refunded for qualifying single-family rebuilds; we’ll help you check eligibility.

Survivors’ ADU rights are protected

A state law signed in September 2026 pauses dense redevelopment in Altadena while residents rebuild, but Eaton Fire survivors keep the ability to build ADUs on their own lots.

County rules and the Altadena Community Standards District

As an unincorporated community, Altadena follows LA County’s ADU ordinance (detached ADUs up to 1,200 sq ft, 16 ft, or 18–20 ft near transit) and the Altadena Community Standards District. Fire-zone construction standards also apply in much of the area.
